Can you explain how I can buy MSD 6?

MSD 6 Lite replaces the MSD 5 Live, MSD 5 LJ and MSD 5 MC Edition
MSD 6 Pro replaces MSD 5 Gold

MSD 6 is now sold on periodic subscription only.
An MSD user pays only for the time period he want (minimum one year)
At the end of that period, MSD 6 will stop working.
Users can choose to pay for another period or may skip a few months or even years before using MSD again.

For example: Previously, users would buy MSD 5 Gold for ~2500 Euro and had a yearly fee of 375 Euro.
Now there are no more initial buying, it is simple the a lower yearly fee of ~499 Euro, as saving of ~1500 Euro over 5 years.

The MSD 6 Lite version goes for ~199 Euro per year.

Current MSD 5 users will keep the same lower yearly fee if they keep they subscription active with MSD 6.

MSD 6 users can buy up to five years license at once and save up a full year in cost i.e.: 20% less, in other words, 5 years for the price of 4.

This way the users pay for what they use and always have access to the latest software features and fixture library in an active license.

Example, a user has a lot of contract on a year and used MSD 6 all year as a great presentation tool to sell his talent.
But the following year he decides to take a break and travel the world. No problem he can skip the subscription for that year without any penalties. The year after he goes back to lighting design and pays for his MSD subscription to reactivate his MSD and he get access to the latest version and fixture library.

This give users a greater flexibility over his finance.

This is why MSD 6 subscription system works better for everyone.

Q: What CODEC should I use to create video in MSD 6?

A: XVID works well it can be downloaded here

Make sure the encoder settings and the MSD Video resolution match.

Q: How do I make a texture look brighter without having to light it up with a fixture?

A: When defining a texture, there’s a field called “Self illumination” set the value in a range from 0.5 to 1.5.
Example of used: to make a white screen, or a video screen, or simply to give some life to a texture by setting the value to 0.1 to 0.3

Q:How to get a good perspective with the Camera in a 3D view?

A:It is very simple.
On the camera proprieties, two settings affect the perspective, the Zoom and the distance from the object or scene.

For example, the normal human field of view (in focus) is between 60 and 90 degree, therefore to get a nice perspective the zoom should be in that range. At this zoom range, you can then position the XYZ of the camera at the same place where you would stand to look at the scene in the real world.

If 0,0,0 is the center of the stage, set the Camera as follow
Position X=0’, Y=6’, Z=20’
Focus X=0’ Y=10’, -20’
Zoom 60 degree

Q: Can I use the same license of MSD on several PC?

A: Yes, but only one at a time.
This mean that you can have the MSD install on as many PC as you want using the same "Dongle" but you will only be able to use the one where the "dongle" is present.

Fast Net-Render can be used on as many PC as desired without the need for a dongle.

Q: I hear and see the word Dongle here and there when talking about MSD... What is a Dongle?

A: A Dongle is a little piece of hardware

Old style Parallel port

New Style One-Key


The Dongle is needed to have the MSD running...

Q: Why such protection?

A: Specialized application such as the MSD can be relatively expensive to buy due to there higher development cost.
In order to protect both the manufacturer and the user who bought the software. the application will only work for those who have the proper dongle.

Q: Is there a way to take items from one scene and Import them into other scenes?

A:
Right now, it is possible to copy items from the 'Object List'. When importing an object, change 'Files of type' to *.scn.



Importing Scene Blocks is in process, and will allow to save & import any objects from one scene to another.

Q:How to stretch or tile texture on an object


A:When you apply a texture to an object, it will take the (original) size of the object into account, but will stretch if the object is then scaled.

For example:

- Build a wall in the Modeler, using a cube, and making it 5 x 2 x 0.1 meters in size.
- Import and insert that wall into a scene.
- Apply a texture material to that wall (texture material having default size of 1.0 x 1.0 meter)

The wall will now have 5 x 2 times the texture on the wall.

If you want the wall to be 10 meters wide, and scale the wall to 10 x 2 meters, the texture will be stretched, so there are still 5 x 2 times the texture on the wall.

If you want 10 x 2 times the texture, you can either make a wall of 10 x 2 in the Modeler, or edit the texture material, making the size of the texture 0.5 x 1.0 meter.

Grid Dimension in print screen in MSD

Q: Is there a way to change the grid spacing in the Print setup inside MSD.

A: This is done via the 'Settings/Preferences/Options' menu. Units settings in the same menu, under 'Units'.

Q: How do I set multiple fixtures on a circular truss?

1. Insert one fixture to your MSD scene.



2. Select the inserted fixture, using Properties (right click option), change its Y axis to 45 degrees, then confirm with OK.




3. Select the 'Multiple Duplicate' option .




3. Click the 'Circular' button.
4. In the 'Copies' dialogue set 11 (for a total of 12 fixtures)
5. In the 'Angle' field set 30 degrees spacing (360 devided by 12)
6. In the 'Radius' field set 2m (for 4m centers circle), or whatever radius that serevs your needs.
7. Click OK

Q: How to use Video in the 3D Visulizer?

First, you should have a proper Video fixture added to your scene file like this one:

1. Open Offline. Make sure Settings/DirectX driver is set to Hardware mode such as Direct3D HAL
2. Load your scene file. Open View/Media Feeds and add a 'New Feed', name it 'Live Video'
3. Add a 'New Video Source'. This should be the link of your live video input.
4. Click on the 'Live Video', and select your file from the drop down list.



5. Additonal configuration (for Live source only) can be done opening 'Configure Source'.
6. Close 'Media Feeds' window, right click your Video Screen fixture, 'Media Feed' then select the required source.
7. Note that PANEL size can be changed in the fixture Properties/Panel Shape tab.

Q: Importing your own bitmaps?

Copy your bitmap to your MSD4\Textures folder, then open MSDModel.
1. View\Material list. Create a new Texture


2. In the 'Create Material' window, link your .jpeg to it. In the 'Mapping' options, choose 'Rectangular' and press OK. In the 'Base' tab, give the material a new name.


3. Insert a Cube, set it at XYZ position to 0\0\0 then set it to the required size (right click Properties option).


4. Click the 'Parts' tab, 'Add', then select 'Material'. Choose the material you've just created, then press OK.


5. In the 'Parts' window, press 'Assign' to link your material to the cube, then OK.


6. From the 'Object' menu save your new object, then 'Library\Save as..' a new library.

That it! A new Video Screen carrying your own bitmap has been created:



Close the Modeler. Now you can insert your new object in Show Designer (View\Object list\Import).

Q: How can I use Artnet with MSD?


Install the Artnet driver on the MSD computer
Set the IP address of that PC to

IP 2.1.128.101
Subnet 255.0.0.0

If you go directly from Maxxyz (or other console) to the PC use a crossover CAT5 cable.

You can check the Artnet coming in with the MSD DMX INFO tool.

Q: How to import complex object from Autocad to MSD?

Here is a tip for all Autocad users who want to create complex 3d DXF objects and use them in show designer.

1. Create a 3D drawing with Autocad. If You want to separate object in MSD (usefull for materials) create differents layers.
2. select the objects you need
3. in tool bar select File\Export to 3Ds
3. Autocad will create from selected object a 3Ds file
4. You can delete in your autocad drawing the objects
5. then in tool bar select insert\3Ds file
6. In the Window which apears choose "transfer all". Then you get back vour objects. You'll see they doesn't look like as before. It's OK. save your DXF.
When you import them in Modeler you wil finally see them. If you didn't forget to use layers you'll be able to apply differents textures to differsnts parts. For example glass for top of a table and wood for legs.

Q: Let’s say that a 40' tall by 50' wide wall. The texture for the wall is a 2 inches tall by 4 inches wide section of the wall. How to make the texture scale accurately in MSD?

A: In the Create Material Properties
-In the Base tab,
-Set the Mapping as Rectangular
-Choose the desire bitmap texture
-Leave the Texture size at 1m X 1m or 3'-3.3701" (this is very important)

In the Mapping tab, use the scale X and Y to set the size

Example: The wall is 480 X 600 inches
The texture is 2 X 4 inches

Scale Width= (4 div 600 = 0.00417)
Scale Height= (2 div 480 = 0.00667)

Q: How to make a table with objects count (example, a truss count table)

Answer, see these instructions



1- Add an area of type "Object Table <new>"

2- Give it a name (truss count)

3- Right-click on it and go to Area Properties, set the Mode as "Fixed Scale, Stretch columns Horizontally" and click OK

4- Right-click on it again and choose Table Properties

5- In Table Properties, press Columns

6- Add the "Name" to the list of columns and press OK

7- Set the "Column is a group" to Yes

8- Set "Show group items count" to Yes



9- At the end of the list there's a Filter (exclude) press the ... button on the right of the field.

10- The list will show all objects names, uncheck all the ones you don't want to see. (example, keep only the truss objects)



Adjust other settings such a background color, font etc as desired.

Q: How to use the MSD Fast NetRender to speed up rendering time?

First install the MSD NetRender Server on at least one PC, it can be the same PC where the MSD is used.
If multiple PC's are available on a network, the MSD NetRender Server can be install on each one of them.

Make sure all Netrender server and client are the latest version.

Once running, the MSD Server will show in the Windows Tray icons.

Right-Click on it to show the menu.
In Settings, a name and color can be set as well as the number of connections that can be used.
it is suggested to leave one connection unused on the computer where the MSD Client server is running.



Then, a "render file" must be generate.
The procedure is similar to generating a Render Preview.

First set the desired visual look. This can be done using the fixture parameters section in the sidebar. Or much faster using an external controller source.
Cues can be recorded in the Scene Contents / Cues section



In the MSD module, go to View menu and click on Render Preview


This first step may take a few seconds, the progress is displayed on the MSD statusbar.


A Render Window will then open


Click on Save and chose RenderFile
A name will automatically be generated and its location is by default the RenderFile folder in MyDocument MSD files.

Now start the MSD Fast NetRender Client Module


Click on menu Task, and Add task, a Window will open


Click on the Browse button of the Input field and select the RenderFile generated earlier.

The Output field will be automatically set.

Set the desired resolution (example 1024x768)

Leave the Anti-Aliasing On for better result.

Click OK, a new task will be queued.


Add other tasks if desired.

Save the renderlist

Click on the Start Rendering icon (yellow arrow)

The rendering will now start and it will display the tasks made on each computer.
The bitmap will be saved automatically at the end of each render.
Render can be stop and resumed at any time.

Note: Computers running too slow can actually slowdown the rendering process, try using similar computers

Rendering done in 4 minutes 17 second
